Saints Short Passing Game Is Key
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds
New Orleans played a solid Chicago defense on Sunday, and they used a lot of short to intermediate passes to neutralize the Bears pass rush. Drew Brees completed over 75% of his passes for the 4th time in the last five games, going 31/41 for 280 yards and 2 TD, and was only sacked once by Chicago. The game plan should stay the same against Tampa Bay’s #2 ranked defense in sacks/game (2.9).
The win over the Bears was the fourth in a row for Sean Payton’s team, but each of them have been by less than one score. Those include a 35-29 win in Detroit, 30-27 vs. the Chargers, 27-24 vs. Carolina, and last week’s 26-23 OT win at Chicago. New Orleans was favored in all those games though, and they’ll be an underdog for the first time this season at Tampa Bay.
For as much pressure as the Saints offense can put on a team, New Orleans’ defense has their work cut out for them against Tampa Bay’s top 10 passing attack. The Saints’ win streak has come against Nick Foles, Teddy Bridgewater, rookie Justin Herbert, and Matthew Stafford – all good, but not great quarterbacks who have tossed 11 TD to 2 INTs over that span.
Tampa Bay Finding a Way
The Buccaneers might have been guilty of looking ahead to Sunday night’s game with New Orleans when they struggled to a 25-23 win against the 1-7 Giants on Monday night. The Bucs are back home though, where they are 3-0 on the season and have scored at least 31 points each game.
The last time Tampa Bay played at Raymond James Stadium was a 38-10 beatdown of then-undefeated Green Bay. The Buccaneers defense forced the first two INTs of the season for Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, and Tampa Bay used 166 yards on the ground to get the win as +3 point home underdogs.
The Buccaneers defense has been great this year, ranking #3 in total yards allowed / game and #1 against the run (70.4). As much as Sunday night’s game has the potential to be an offensive showdown, stats were at a premium when the teams met up in the season opener, a 34-23 Saints home win. Tom Brady threw for 239 yards in that game, but also had two INTs. Brees was held to just 160 yards passing by the Tampa Bay defense in week one.
Our Pick:
Vegas Odds Tampa Bay Buccaneers Make Playoffs
It’s hard to go against the Saints riding a 4-game win streak, especially with a point spread that seems a bit high at +4.5. New Orleans already has a win over Tampa Bay on the year, and the Buccaneers are playing on a short week after Monday night’s game.
If anyone was prescient enough to bet on Tampa Bay to win Super Bowl LV next February 7, 2021, and that eventually does happen, those gamblin’ men and women are gonna be in for a nice payout.
Before the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady, their odds to win Super Bowl LV were 55-1. When Brady jumped aboard the pirate ship, they dropped to 16-1. And after Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement, was traded by the Patriots and joined his old buddy, TB’s odds are now at 9-1.
That’s tied with the 49ers for third. Only the Chiefs (6-1) and the Ravens (7-1) are ahead of the Bucs.
And consider this: Super Bowl LV will be played in Raymond James Stadium, where guess who plays … you got it, Bucs. So, a possible first-time Super Bowl home game. How convenient.
So, yeah, those early 55-1 bets gotta make ya feel good.
